Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake says the President abruptly prorogued Parliament due to the government’s inability to tolerate officials of Parliamentary Select Committees diligently discharging their responsibilities.
SJB National Organizer MP Tissa Attanayake addressing a media briefing said the process to obtain views of party leaders and implement measures after Parliament convenes on the 18th of January, will require at least six months.
He said the prorogation of Parliament is not linked to a major economic crisis adding it relates to the Committee on Public Enterprises and Committee on Public Accounts.
Attanayake said the Chairmen of the Committees are pointing out various shortcomings and are investigating previous incidents and are diligently fulfilling their duties, adding that this has likely raised concerns within the government.
The MP added new committee members will be appointed when Parliament convenes again.
MP Attanayake on a separate note said despite claims by Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardana that 50 items can be purchased through Lanka Sathosa outlets during the festive period for low rates, such discounted items are not available.
He claimed upon visiting a Sathosa outlet it is apparent that only Nadu rice is available and charged that the public is being deceived and claimed the public has no faith in the Minister’s statements.
The MP also said while there is a lack of goods, the government does not have sufficient funds to import stocks either.
