The opposition says that the trade union action staged by health professionals has been successful because it was a strike carried out on reasonable demands.
Speaking during a media briefing, Parliamentarian Dr. Rajitha Senaratne stated that several previous governments have taken steps to make the health service an essential service on several occasions in order to sabotage the trade union action.
MP Senaratne said at present, nearly 100,000 are protesting and a large number of patients are affected by the trade union action.
He said staging a strike is a right of a worker which has been ensured across the globe.
MP Rajitha Senaratne said if unions exhaust their options to win the demands, then they have a right to launch a strike.
MP Senaratne claimed that by issuing gazettes, authorities will not be able to halt strikes.
He said there were precedents where previous governments attempted to prevent strikes through gazettes.
MP Rajitha Senaratne claimed as long as the demands are reasonable, the public will extend its support to strikes.
