The opposition says the independence of the judiciary is under threat as the Attorney General’s Department is being influenced unduly.
A group of opposition Parliamentarians today handed over a letter to the Attorney General seeking information pertaining to all court cases that were taken forward or withdrawn following the appointment of the new government.
MPs have claimed that a large number of cases filed against Ministers and their associates have been withdrawn in the past two years.
Speaking to NewsRadio, Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahman said they filed a right to information request with the aim of protecting the supremacy of the law and the independence of the judiciary.
He said they requested details about court cases since indictments filed on nearly 20 individuals have been withdrawn after the 16th of November 2019.
MP Rahman said a majority of those cases were filed against either politicians or their affiliates.
He said influencing the functions of the Attorney General’s Department is a threat to rule of law and the country’s judicial system.
