Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa today tabled the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2021 in Parliament, for the reference of the State Minister of Women and Child Development Piyal Nishantha De Silva.
MP Premadasa speaking in Parliament urged the State Minister to pay attention to pages 353 and 354 in order to provide full assistance for the empowerment of women.
The Parliamentarian said in the 2006 report, Singapore was ranked 65th while France ranked 70th and Ethiopia ranked 100th, adding however by the year 2020 Singapore ranked 54th while Ethiopia reached 82nd place and France 15th.
The Opposition Leader however said unfortunately Sri Lanka dropped 89 ranks to reach 116th.
Joining the debate, State Minister Seetha Arambepola claimed she studied the report adding the decline of ranking was a gradual decrease from 2006 and did not occur within a span of one year.
