The opposition has strongly condemned the alleged partisan behaviour of the current Speaker of Parliament.
Speaking during a media briefing today, Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahuman said there are serious concerns over Parliamentary democracy in Sri Lanka today.
MP Rahuman said MP Manusha Nanayakkara had the final speech during the debate on the Expenditure heads of the Ministries of Defence and Public Security on Friday.
The Parliamentarian said however it was evident that the Speaker deliberately reduced the allocated time during MP Nanayakkara’s speech.
He said the Speaker must allocate the entire time limit to all MPs to continue their speech as the Speaker had already extended Parliamentary proceedings adding it is the tradition of Parliament.
MP Rahuman said this tradition was adhered to throughout the history of Parliament irrespective of who was in power or who the Speaker was adding however the present Speaker clearly halted MP Nanayakkara’s speech under the influence of the Chief Government Whip.
The MP alleged during the confrontation, Ministers, former Ministers and MPs of the government attempted to cross to the Opposition lines and levelled various threats on Opposition MPs.
Meanwhile, commenting on the severe economic difficulties faced by the public, MP Rahuman said the public is facing psychological stress due the prevalent fertiliser crisis, daily rise in prices of essential items and now due to the gas shortage, power, and water cuts.
He said the public is facing uncertainty over the future.
Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahuman said government MPs are unable to face the public let alone visit their electorates.
