The opposition claims the process and criterion followed by the present government to appoint vice chancellors to local universities are an insult to the entire university system.
Speaking in Parliament, during the committee stage debate, Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella said the current system must be halted and the government should rectify its mistakes.
He said although Parliament is discussing the freedom of education, the appointments to universities at present are being made in an arbitrary manner.
MP Kiriella said during the tenure of the good governance government, lecturers through a vote selected the vice chancellors to their respective universities.
He said the present administration had changed that process and has been handing over appointments to its affiliates.
Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella urged the government to give the freedom to the local universities to select their heads.
He said universities around the world have developed since they were given freedom and were able to function independently.
MP Kiriella also requested the attention of the government regarding the reduction of enrolment to medical faculties this year.
He said the number of enrolments to medical faculties has reduced by 200 this year.
