The Opposition has condemned the decision to summon Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini to the Criminal Investigation Department, based on a discussion he had with a group of Lankans residing overseas concerning the injustice caused to Catholics through the Easter Sunday attacks investigation.
Issuing a statement, General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara condemned the investigation following a complaint lodged by the Director of the State Intelligence Service Major General Suresh Salley, who claimed the forum raised false allegations against him.
The SJB said the SIS Director must read the report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry appointed to probe the Easter attacks, and support the government’s decision to bring the perpetrators to book, instead of lodging a complaint against individuals who are genuinely concerned for justice.
The statement also said the SIS Director is attempting to dampen investigations into the attacks, and instil fear in those seeking the truth.
The SJB claimed the complaint has a hidden agenda to divert investigations, by holding the Catholic church as a responsible party, while the church tries to seek justice for victims.
Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara also criticised the government over its promise to ensure justice to victims prior to the election, and now investigating those who question the incident on the 21st of April.
