The opposition claims the government does not have the means to fund the Rs.229 billion stimulus package introduced recently, and will resort to printing more money in the upcoming days.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Parliamentarian SM Marikkar questioned how the government will generate funds to implement the package since the Budget for this year was passed only last month.
Parliamentarian Marikkar said when questioned by media, the Minister of Finance also did not have answers to how the package would be funded.
The MP claimed it is evident that the government will print more money which will lead to inflation increasing further.
MP Marikkar said the public is well aware that if inflation goes up, the prices of goods will also rise steeply.
He said therefore the Rs. 5,000 allowance will be insufficient to even purchase basic needs.
Parliamentarian SM Marikkar said Sri Lankans like in some African countries will have to take money in wheelbarrows to purchase essential goods in the future.
He also questioned whether the government is intending on holding the Provincial Council election in April and therefore granting concession to even people who are growing plants in 20 perch land plots.
MP SM Marikkar said similar tactics were used before the 2015 Presidential Election.
He said sil clothing, pots and pans and motorbikes were given to state sector workers before the 2015 Presidential Election in a bid to gain their support.
MP Marikkar stated that however the public will not be fooled by Rs. 5000 allowance since they have an understanding of the state of the country.
