Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa charges that opportunists are actively attempting to protect the Rajapaksas in a situation where steps to abolish the executive presidency are required to be taken.

MP Premadasa condemned conspiracies against the draft 21st Amendment tabled by Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara as a Private MPs motion.

Addressing a gathering of social media activists in Galle, Parliamentarian Premadasa said the fully fledged 21st Amendment to the Constitution put forth by MP Madduma Bandara was being diluted by individuals conspiring on self interests.

The Opposition Leader said calls for a referendum and majority in Parliament were part of a conspiracy adding the first step should be taken by Parliament.

He noted, a referendum could be called after the initial steps were taken.

MP Premadasa questioned as to why at least 150 of the 225 MP’s refused to support the abolishment of the executive presidency, adding certain individuals were protecting the Rajapaksas.

He charged such individuals of aspiring to the post of Prime Minister or President while having personal agenda’s.

MP Sajith Premadasa said the dilution of the proposal put forth by MP Madduma Bandara was to ensure that those who fail to secure the people’s mandate could still aspire to be in power.

He charged the government of appointing individuals that will protect the Rajapaksas adding that was not the objective of the people’s struggle.
