The Department of Immigration and Emigration has decided to increase the number of passports issued daily, under the one day service.
It attributed this decision to the increasing number of individuals arriving at the Department Office in Battaramulla, to obtain a passport.
It revealed that two thousand passports are issued through one day service on a usual day at the Department.
However, a decision has been taken to increase this number up to 3,500.
Under this programme, a decision has been taken to divide Department staff for two separate shifts.
The first shift will be worked off from 7 am to 2 pm, and the second shift from 2pm to 10 pm.
Meanwhile, a decision has also been taken to issue passports through all District Secretariats, beginning next year.
The programme will be worked off in a similar manner to the passport issuance at main and regional offices of the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
The Ministry of Public Administration and Management said they hope this programme will reduce congestion within the Department, when obtaining a passport.
