The National People’s Power-Engineering Forum has tabled several proposals to address issues that have arisen in the construction sector.
Issuing a statement, the Forum said the government must intervene to direct individuals who have lost employment owing to the present crisis as selected skilled workers.
Another proposal includes providing relief for bank loans and leasing facilities obtained by construction companies.
The statement said the possibility of granting concessions through the Employees Provident Fund for individuals who have lost employment should also be considered.
The Engineering Forum said a number of Chinese construction work is underway in the country while a large percentage of the workforce is Chinese nationals.
They claim the government should intervene to amend this situation and request the Chinese government and relevant companies to provide employment opportunities for Sri Lankans at such construction projects.
