State Minister of Livestock DB Herath says there is no shortage of milk powder at present.
Speaking to media after a function yesterday, the State Minister said sufficient stocks of milk powder have been imported, adding the public need not fear a shortage.
The State Minister claimed 40% of the local milk demand is met through local producers, adding that the country must be self-sufficient in meeting the demand for milk powder.
He noted the government will be unable to achieve this feat immediately.
However, the State Minister added the Ministry has formulated a plan to reach this target in two to three years.
State Minister Herath said imports declined with the emergence of the coronavirus, adding that milk powder however remains available.
He revealed of plans with the private sector to promote liquid milk to consumers.
The State Minister denied media reports of an increase in prices.
