Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage says the government will not pay compensation to farmers who did not use the organic fertiliser provided by the government.
Speaking to media in Kandy the Agriculture Minister said the government provided all farmers with an application for compensation.
He said the government will look into whether the farmer has used fertiliser provided by the government when providing compensation.
He noted the government provided four types of fertiliser, adding that it cannot provide compensation if the farmer has not used any of the fertiliser.
The Agriculture Minister said compensation will be provided after looking into all such matters.
Minister Aluthgamage said the government provided organic solid fertiliser, bio liquid fertiliser, potassium chloride and nano nitrogen.
He added farmers must have used all four types of fertiliser.
The Minister stated the government will provide compensation if the farmers produce reduced after using all four types of fertiliser.
He reiterated the government has taken the responsibility of providing fertiliser and will provide compensation if issues arise regarding the fertiliser provided by the government.
Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage further said he would not hesitate to take action regarding alleged fraud within the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Minister said he himself admitted that officials within the Ministry did not provide him with enough support, while claiming that the chemical fertiliser industry is a mafia.
He claimed fraud was committed when distributing, importing and regarding the quality of fertiliser.
The Minister revealed of a fraud amounting to Rs.8 billion by importing substandard fertiliser in 2018 and 2019.
He added however officials were hesitant to reveal such matters.
