The government has decided to establish a tourism zone similar to the Colombo Port City surrounding the Galle Harbour.
Speaking to media following an event in Colombo, Minister of Ports & Shipping Rohitha Abegunawardhana said it will be constructed on 40 hectares by filling sand.
The Minister said it was stated in the “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour” national policy framework that the Galle Harbour will be developed as a tourism zone.
Minister Abegunawardhana said similar to the Colombo Port City, shopping complexes, hotels and housing related to the tourism sector will be established through private investors in Galle.
He added it will be developed as a tourist attraction.
On a separate note, Minister Abegunawardhana said development activities of the West Container Terminal of the Colombo Port will commence next month.
He noted development activities of the East Container Terminal commenced on the 12th of January this year.
Minister Abegunawardhana said through the move the government will increase the capacity of port operations in the country by 100 percent.
