The Foreign Ministry says a resolution on Sri Lanka will not be tabled at this year’s United Nations Human Rights Council session and a vote will not be taken.

Secretary to the Foreign Ministry Prof. Admiral Jayanath Colambage speaking at a media briefing at the Government Information Department today said the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights will only submit a report on Sri Lanka.

He said the 49th session of the UNHRC will get underway on the 28th of February in Geneva, Switzerland.

Colambage said Sri Lanka is aware of what the report will entail, and the government has responded to the content of the report.

He added the government will await the content of the UN High Commissioner’s report to observe if Sri Lanka’s facts have been taken up for consideration.

Prof. Colambage said Sri Lanka expects the support of several nations at the UNHRC session.

He claimed that Sri Lanka will never agree to an external mechanism as it is against the UN Convention adding that when internal mechanisms are in place successfully, external intervention is not required.
