The Cabinet of Minister has granted approval to introduce new laws related to contempt of court.
Accordingly, the Legal Draftsman will be instructed to draft a bill to enact a new law pertaining to contempt of court.
At present, the offence of contempt of court has not been defined in Sri Lankan Law and therefore has no clear and uniform procedure for hearing and adjudicating such cases.
As a result, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Reforms has indicated that it is difficult to identify the limits of interference on the justice process and the limits on the right to freedom of expression.
Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers based on a proposal tabled by the Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms decided to introduce a new law based on the preliminary draft formulated by the Law Commission of Sri Lanka which studied the matter with a view to introducing appropriate laws.
