Police says a special program will be implemented island wide to reduce road accidents.

Senior Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said police plan on using a new device to identify persons using alcohol and drugs.

He reiterated that statistics reveal the main cause for a majority of road accidents, as undisciplined drivers, including ignorance when driving, being on the phone, high speed driving, driving under the influence and ignoring vehicular defects.

The SDIG commented that motorcyclists, three-wheeler drivers and pedestrians were the main parties that have to suffer consequences as a result of such drivers.

Accordingly, police hope to instill discipline among drivers through a special programme in the near future.

He also noted that laws will be drafted to take legal action against persons driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Senior DIG Ajith Rohana added that a new device will be introduced under this programme as well.

SDIG Ajith Rohana presented statistics from the National Transport Medical Institute where 1200 individuals enter daily to obtain a medical certificate.

He said research reveals that 8%-10% of the total tests are classified as persons addicted to alcohol.

Police assured that they will take steps to control the situation and arrest wrongdoers.
