The National Youth Corp. says volunteer work in assisting the National Fuel Pass initiative is a success.
Chairman Dharshana Ratnayake speaking to media said 29,600 individuals have obtained a fuel pass with the assistance of representatives of the National Youth Corp. since the 19th of July.
Ratnayake noted the volunteer programme will be conducted under three phases.
He explained that centres of the Youth Corp. have the necessary technical skills and resources to provide a printed copy of the fuel pass.
Ratnayake noted that cadets will be available at shopping malls, filling stations, bus and train stations in order to provide the fuel pass to those without internet or a smartphone.
He added cadets will visit persons in remote areas as well.
Ratnayake expressed hope in further expediting the process of issuing fuel passes, after the 25th of this month.
Joining the media briefing, Minister of Transport of the Sri Lanka Youth Parliament Ishan Priyaranga said a black market mafia to purchase fuel is currently operating.
Priyaranga said individuals purchasing fuel from filling stations at standard prices are reselling fuel at a profit.
He said Youth Parliamentarians held discussions on how this could be countered where it was decided that fuel quotas being recorded on QR code will greatly assist the cause.
Priyaranga said the functions to record the balance fuel allowance will also assist in ensuring the public does not panic over remaining fuel stocks.
He proposed the introduction of a function to notify the public as to when fuel stocks will be available at filling stations through the QR code.
