The United National Party says a national election is required to resolve the current crises faced by the country.
Speaking during a media briefing at the UNP headquarters Sirikotha today, Chairman of the Party Vajira Abeywardena said owing to the current financial issues, public funds cannot be used for the conduct of elections.
He said however funds should be allocated for a national election and steps must be taken to provide solutions to the prevailing issues.
Former Minister Vajira Abeywardena said according to legal provisions, the next election can be held after the 5th of February 2023.
He said the UNP will make preparations to face the next election by rallying the members and supporters.
The UNP Chairman noted that already campaign proposals have been sent to all wards in the country and from March they are hoping to carry-out programmes targeting the election.
Former Minister Abeywardena said programmes will be initiated with the participation of the youth wing, professionals as well as the women’s wing of the UNP.
He reiterated the importance of formulating national policies for areas that concern the people in the long-run.
The Former Minister said national policies should be taken forward by governments for at least 15 to 20 years adding that the country will succeed only if all political parties work towards a national cause.
UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena noted that the current power crisis can also be resolved by having long-term policies.
He said the country is still benefiting from the projects that were initiated by UNP-led administrations that governed the country after 1977.
He said several projects were in the pipeline when the UNP was in power between the 2015-2019 period adding however the present administration failed to implement them.
Former Minister Vajira Abeywardena stressed that under a future UNP-led government, policies will be introduced that can be implemented by all political parties.
