The All Ceylon Farmers’ Federation says a stringent investigation must be conducted into the explosion of several plastic cans containing nano nitrogen fertiliser imported into the country.
Speaking to NewsRadio, National Organiser of the Federation Namal Karunaratne said the country has lost more than Rs.7 billion as a result of importing liquid organic fertiliser.
Karunaratne said farmers and officials of Govijana Seva Centres are in fear over the incidents of cans exploding, leaking and caps falling off adding the substance must not come into contact with bare skin.
He said the two subject Ministers are engaged in pinning the blame on each other.
Karunaratne questioned whether the nano nitrogen fertiliser was up to standard and if so, what caused the explosions.
He said the firm which issued the fertiliser owns the patent for chemical fertiliser adding the government imported nano urea and not nano nitrogen.
Karunaratne said the fertiliser had not been field tested adding Sri Lanka has become the test subject.
