Expenditure heads of the Ministries of Industries and Trade and several State Ministries including the State Ministry of Cooperative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection were passed in Parliament today.
Speaking in Parliament during the Committee Stage Debate, Parliamentarian Harshana Rajakaruna said the previous Mahinda Rajapaksa-led administration obtained loans at high-interest rates to carry out non-essential projects.
He claimed that high-interest loans have a long-term detrimental impact on the country.
Parliamentarian Harshana Rajakaruna said the economic growth was at 8% as a result of unnecessary development projects including the Hambantota Airport, Harbour and the Conference Hall which were carried out by obtaining loans in 2007 and 2008.
MP Rajakaruna noted however during the tenure of the former government they were able to take forward the economy in general.
He claimed a majority of highway extensions were constructed between 2015 and 2019. The MP however said the former government did not promote its progressive projects.
In response, Minister Namal Rajapaksa said the Conference Hall in Hambantota was not constructed using a loan, and it was a grant.
Minister Rajapaksa called for MP Rajakaruna’s statement to be removed from the Hansard as it is inaccurate.
Minister Namal Rajapaksa also called for MP Rajakaruna to retract his statement, stating the public will be deceived by such false claims.
