Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera says posts shared on Members of Parliament been given subsidised fuel rates is false.
A post was circulating from this morning of MPs vehicles being pumped a litre of fuel at Rs.121.19 at a filling station in Narahenpita.
The Minister however said no MP from the government nor the opposition has been given subsidised rates opposed to the current market prices given to the public.
Minister Wijesekera said he instructed the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation to carry out an investigation on the rates displayed in the dispenser at the Police garage.
The Minister claimed that no one will be extended privileges on fuel stations other than ambulance essential services.
Speaking in Parliament to clarify the matter, the Minister said requests were made from the Inspector General of Police into the possibility of facilitating fuel for MPs to report to Parliament.
Minister Wijesekera said the filling station at the Narahenpita Police station does not sell fuel, while fuel is disbursed to Policemen in litres, while the CPC in writing granted approval for the Police garage to issue fuel to MPs by paying the relevant market price, Rs.334.19 for a litre of petrol and Rs.289.13 for a litre of diesel.
He said the supply of fuel was conditional, and only Rs.8,000 were issued to vehicles, three-wheelers Rs.3,000, and motorbikes Rs.2,000.
However, the Minister noted that the dispenser at the Police garage has not been updated in more than three to four years and indicated Rs.121 per litre, which is an old pricing.
The Energy Minister claimed that the garage was informed to suspend the supply of fuel on cash as of this morning while an investigation has been called over the delay in updating the machine.
(1) While I do understand the frustration and anger from the public, posts shared on MPs been given subsidized fuel rates is false. No MP from either side or anyone has been given subsidized rates than the current market prices given to the public.
