Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Kabir Hashim says government and opposition parties must unite and reach a final decision promptly as time is ticking to resolve the prevailing political crisis.
Speaking in Parliament during the debate on the International Monetary Fund Article IV Staff Report yesterday, MP Hashim said the nation, if not, would be in danger.
The Parliamentarian said as an economic expert he understands the dire situation, adding the country has a few weeks at most left to seek a solution.
He said everyone must stop laying blame on each other.
Joining the debate MP Eran Wickramaratne said the Executive has had a profound effect on the independence of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
MP Wickramaratne said printing money was a result to executive powers vested with the Head of State.
The Parliamentarian said through the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, the Cabinet was weakened while the President was empowered to an extent where he assumed the country could be governed by officials.
He said irrespective of who is in power, the country cannot move forward under the current system.
MP Wickramaratne said therefore the Executive Presidency must be abolished immediately.
Meanwhile, MP Chandima Weerakkody called on the President, Prime Minister, the government, the Leader of the Opposition and the entire opposition to join hands in order to resolve the prevailing political crisis.
MP Weerakkody said the public has lost faith in governments and the Parliamentary system.
He said under such circumstances everyone rejoices over the fact that after much deliberation the country sought the assistance of the IMF.
The Parliamentarian called for a united interim all party government to be established to seek solutions.
He said engaging in politics can be put on hold at the moment until solutions for the crises are provided.
