Parliamentarian JC Alawathuwala says the country could face a famine by the next Sinhala and Tamil New Year season.
Speaking to NewsRadio, MP Alawathuwala said the inflation is continuously rising due to unplanned and arbitrary moves to print money.
MP Alawathuwala noted that the prices of vegetables and other commodities have increased steeply.
He said some vegetables are being sold for more than Rs. 500 per kilogram.
JC Alawathuwala stressed that due to the ill-advised overnight fertilizer ban, farmers have been struggling while the harvests have also reduced considerably.
He said due to the fertilizer shortage, the necessary food items are not being produced in the country while due to the dollar shortage, the public cannot import such items.
