A number of public and private sector trade unions are currently engaged in a one-day token strike as of midnight.

Nearly 1,000 unions from a number of sectors, including the state service, health, ports, electricity, education, and postal, have joined the strike action demanding the resignation of the President and the current government.

The unions claim the island-wide strike action will lead to the disruption of many public sector services today.

University lecturers will also join the strike action with protests being staged opposite universities across the island.

Around 50 percent of hospitals and health workers have also joined the strike, while services at hospitals however will not be affected. Health workers on duty will be dressed in black.

Protests and marches will be held opposite all hospitals from noon today.

Meanwhile, a large-scale protest rally organised by unions is scheduled to be held at noon opposite the Fort Railway Station. I

n addition, the trade unions will march from several locations such as the Lipton Circus in Colombo to reach the Galle Face protest site.
