Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarian Jagath Kumara Sumithraarachchi says they were informed that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will announce his resignation today.

Speaking to media, MP Sumithraarachchi said they have not reached a final decision on forming a government with the opposition adding however they must move forward with the proposal to form a national consensus government.

He said they are unable to solve the prevailing crisis as an individual group.

The Parliamentarian said everyone must unite in order to solve the prevailing issues in the country.

He said everyone must be willing to forfeit portfolios and work towards the betterment of the nation.

When questioned by media whether the government MPs are of the view that the Premier Rajapaksa must not resign, MP Sumithraarachchi said they stand with the public adding everyone must work towards solving the prevailing crisis by adhering to the calls of the Chief Prelates and the public.

Commenting on the events which unfolded during the Prime Minister’s visit to Anuradhapura, the MP claimed groups also extended their support and blessings to Prime Minister Rajapaksa.

MP Sumithraarachchi also said the Prime Minister must step down before the No-Confidence Motion is passed in Parliament.
