A group of independent Parliamentarians has proposed further changes to the draft of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.
Parliamentarians Patali Champika Ranawaka, Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, Chandima Weerakkody and WDJ Seneviratne expressed their views to media today pertaining to the proposals.
MP Seneviratne said they are proposing a number of changes as it will change the structure of the governance of the country.
He said they are proposing a set of provisions that the President must appoint Cabinet Ministers only after consulting the Prime Minister, the number of Cabinet Ministers should be no more than 30 members, Parliament cannot be dissolved before the completion of three years and changes to the composition of the Constitutional Council.
MP WDJ Seneviratne said according to the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, the composition of the Constitutional Council is seven MPs and three members from civil society groups.
He said however they are of the view that the composition should change to six MPs and four civil society members.
The Parliamentarian said they have also identified certain shortcomings in the 19th Constitutional Amendment which they are hoping to highlight.
Meanwhile, Parliamentarian Chandima Weerakkody said although the draft of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution had been presented to the Cabinet on multiple occasions, approval has not been granted thus far.
