The Lawyers’ Forum for the People has decided to assist the 45 individuals who were arrested by Police following the Mirihana riot last evening.
Convener Senaka Perera speaking to NewsRadio condemned action being taken against individuals who took a stand for social issues.
Perera said yesterday’s protest included the public expressing their displeasure at the power outages and shortages of fuel, gas, and other essential items.
He stated the government retaliated against people who were voicing their issues through the use of tear gas, water cannons, and by arresting a number of individuals.
Perera added the protestors were well within their rights to protest, adding the public reached a breaking point in terms of patience.
He said those who attended the protest did not demand a Presidential Election.
Attorney Perera said if the government resorts to arresting protesters, the People’s Lawyers Organization has a duty to represent such individuals.
