The Academy of Health Professionals says the Ministry of Health is in a crisis due to arbitrary decisions taken by certain officials.
It says the incident where the Chairman and the Managing Director of the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation resigning following a disagreement with the subject Minister is an example for understanding the conflicts amongst the administration of the Health Ministry.
The union said this issue had arisen as a result of officials attempting to act above their mandate.
Speaking during a media briefing today, the Chairman of the Union Ravi Kumudesh said there is a deeper issue behind the episode as such incidents are uncommon.
Kumudesh said it is clear that the Health Ministry is in a crisis.
Commenting further on the situation, he said the previous Health Minister had to resign from the post due to being subjected to such actions by the officials.
The Chairman of the union said Minister Pavithra Devi Wanniarachchi was used as a puppet adding this was as result of certain groups having more authority than the Minister.
He claimed the Minister could not function independently which resulted in her resignation.
Kumudesh said this group is currently threatening the current subject Minister with hope that the President will intervene and allow these individuals to act independently which will again result in the Subject Minister being a puppet.
Kumudesh said letting such individuals to act in this manner is against the country’s law and procedures.
