Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardana has submitted a written request to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, requesting officials to expedite investigations over a complaint lodged against him.
The National Movement for Protection of Consumer Rights lodged a complaint with the Bribery Commission regarding fraud that took place in the purchase of face masks, where Rs.2 per mask was allegedly credited to the ‘Pragna Bandu’ fund established by the Trade Minister.
Minister Gunawardana speaking to media today rejected the claims and stressed this was a move to sabotage his goodwill.
He stressed the fund was established by the Minister using his personal funds of Rs.10 million to facilitate a monthly scholarship for students studying in the Advanced Level technology stream. He said the scholarship has grown to Rs.20 million following donations by family members and well-wishers.
Therefore, he requested the Bribery Commission to do justice to the Minister via an independent investigation as he has not taken funds from the purchase of face masks.
