Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva says the Provincial Council Election should be held in 2022.
Speaking during day three of the adjournment debate on the government’s policy statement in Parliament today the Minister said lengthy talks were held during meetings of the Parliamentary Committee on electoral reforms.
He said the National Election Commission, civil society organisations and political parties specifically requested for certain clauses to be included.
The Minister said they include a finalised electoral calendar with specified dates, and the need to conduct Provincial Council and Local Government Elections.
Minister de Silva expressed hope in the conduct of elections at the earliest and to provide a platform for the public to express their democratic rights.
The Minister added discussions were also held over reducing election spending, where efforts will be made to conduct a free and fair election as well.
