Minister of Agriculture, Wildlife & Forest Conservation Mahinda Amaraweera assures that a programme will be implemented within two days to provide fuel for farmers who have been unable to cultivate crops due to the lack of fuel.
The Minister speaking to media after assuming duties in his new portfolio yesterday said farmers will be provided fuel in cans.
The Minister noted that the government held a round of discussions with the Prime Minister last morning, during which a number of issues pertaining to the yala season arose.
He said the main matter that must be urgently addressed is for farmers to resume cultivation, adding that the main concern is the lack of fuel.
Minister Amaraweera said farmers are not being provided fuel to cans, adding they cannot operate tractors as a result leading to thousands of acres of land going unattended. He said the matter was taken up with both the President and Prime Minister today.
Minister Amaraweera said they will select a number of filling stations in relevant areas and will implement a programme for fuel to be issued based on a letter of recommendation.
