The National People’s Power urges the government to take immediate action to arrest Wasantha Handapangoda and other trade union leaders who participated in the meeting held at Temple Trees on the 9th of May.
Attorney Sunil Watagala said it is unfortunate that the law is not being enforced despite clear evidence of allies of the Rajapaksa government attacking protesters opposite Temple Trees and at Galle Face green.
Speaking at a media briefing, Attorney Sunil Watagala said an individual involved in torching a bus in Mirihana was seen attacking the youth at Galle Face while the victims of the attack were in the ICU.
Attorney Watagala stated the thugs involved in the Mirihana incident were responsible for the attacks on protestors at Galle Face as well.
He said the JVP and NPP were being falsely accused of these attacks while charging the government of co-ordinating the attacks.
Attorney Watagala said Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakonne was seen interacting with criminals as if they were “best friends”.
Attorney Watawala said statements made by trade unionist Wasantha Handapangoda warranted her arrest.
He pointed out that she had stated that people had taken the law to their own hands and resorted to violently assaulting those opposite of Temple Trees because authorities were reluctant to take action against the protestors.
Attorney Watawala noted Wasantha Handapangoda was not been apprehended thus far adding that under the criminal law of the country such statements should result in the arrest of the individual.
