Teachers of schools in the Mawanella education zone will launch a strike action today.
The strike is being held against the failure to arrest the Vice Chairman of the Mawanella Pradeshiya Sabha and several public representatives who threatened a group of teachers and parents at a protest opposite the Mawanella Mederigama School recently.
Chief Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Service Union Mahinda Jayasinghe said all teachers and principals of the Mawanella zone will not report for duty today.
Jayasinghe said instead they will gather at the Mawanella town.
He said they warned the government to refrain from interfering with teachers and principals adding that they are capable of shutting down schools island-wide.
However, Jayasinghe said they have a responsibility towards children’s education.
