The March 12 Movement is of the view that all political parties in Parliament must decide on the new President by consensus.
Issuing a statement, the Movement said a group that can take forward a common programme for maximum one year should also be selected.
The March 12 Movement has also requested the Presidential hopefuls to present their programme to the country.
It said it will allow the public to scrutinise the respective programmes.
The March 12 Movement noted that it is the duty of the interim administration that is to be formed, to fulfil the aspirations of the people by ensuring economic stability and also undertaking political reforms.
The Movement added that Members of Parliament have a bigger responsibility to the country than merely complying with the interest of political parties.
Sri Lanka is set to elect a new President in the next 72 hours.
Last Thursday, Sri Lanka’s Seventh Executive President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned from his post following weeks-long protests.
Meanwhile, last week, Parliament announced that nominations for the election of President will be accepted tomorrow.
If more than one nomination if submitted, a Parliamentary vote will be taken up on Wednesday to elect the new President.
