Minister of Tourism Prasanna Ranatunga says plans are in place to implement several international projects to promote the tourism industry in Sri Lanka that has been severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
Accordingly, the Minister said a global live broadcast of Sri Lanka’s tourist attractions will begin online from January 2022.
The Minister speaking in Parliament yesterday said 130 videos have been produced and will be circulated weekly.
Minister Ranatunga added they received proposals for investment opportunities in the tourism sector thus far this year with 33 investment opportunities during the first nine months of 2021 alone.
He added the investments amount to USD 92 million while approval has also been granted for these projects.
Joining the debate, Parliamentarian Geetha Kumarasinghe said the tourism industry has been severely affected owing to the coronavirus situation.
MP Kumarasinghe said tourist arrivals have unfortunately reduced and it has had an impact on the economy.
She proposed that the Beruwala, Moragalla to Galle beach area be developed especially tourist destinations and lodges, and to establish institutions that will help youth learn different languages that will help communicate with tourists.
