The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says yesterday’s protest in Mirihana was attended by the public suffering in queues.
Speaking during a media briefing today, the General Secretary of the SJB Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara said a majority of the protesters were from the neighbourhood around the President’s residence.
MP Madduma Bandara said the public engaged in the protest as a final resort after calling for months for the government to provide solutions or resign.
The Parliamentarian said the government attempted to disperse the crowds using law enforcement.
Also joining the media breifing MP Harsha De Silva says the situation faced by the journalists who came to cover yesterday’s incident in Mirihana were severely beaten by Police.
The MP said a reporter was beaten up by Police despite showing his media credentials.
MP De Silva said his request was not heard by the Officer In Charge, when he called for the journalist to be taken to hospital immediately.
He stressed on the importance of securing media freedom in a democratic country.
