President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed Major General Vikum Liyanage as the new 24th Commander of the Army.
The Letter of Appointment was presented to the new Army Commander today at the President’s house.
He will be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and will assume duties in his new post tomorrow.
Lieutenant General Liyanage who joined the Sri Lanka Army in 1986 as a Cadet Officer served as the Commanding Officer of the 57th and 56th Divisions of the 8th Gajaba Regiment during conflict against the LTTE.
During his time on the field, the Army Commander was bestowed many medals including the Ranavikrama and Ranashura medals, the Eastern Humanitarian Operation Medal, Northern and Eastern Operation Medal and more.
Meanwhile General Shavendra Silva is due to assume office on the 1st of June 2022 as the new Chief of Defence Staff.
The Letter of Appointment was presented to General Shavendra Silva today at the President’s house.
General Silva relinquished the office of the Commander of the Army today.
General Shavendra Silva was serving as acting Chief of Defence Staff at the time he was appointed to this new office.
