Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage says the government acknowledges that the prices of essential commodities have increased significantly.
However, the Minister said the government’s focus over the past year has been on protecting the lives of the people from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Minister said the safety of public lives was ensured. Minister Aluthgamage speaking at an event in Nawalapitiya acknowledged that milk powder, gas, sugar, dhal and goods prices have increased adding that during a 20-month period the government had to battle the coronavirus pandemic.
The Minister said the President was focused on saving lives from the virus, adding that today there is hope in life over death by the coronavirus.
Minister Aluthgamage said the government has addressed the challenge of COVID-19.
He claimed that as a result of tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka have increased, gradually income generation is rising and expressed hope that the prevalent situation will subside by April or May.
The Minister also stated that many individuals lash out at the government for the present crisis, claiming they have the right to do so citing that the government understands their plight.
The Agriculture Minister said he was the most famous person during a period of six to seven months last year, with his effigies burnt, stomped on, and assaulted during protests.
However, the Minister expressed hope that the government will solve all prevalent issues.
