Minister Mahinda Amaraweera says he expects the current fuel queues to reduce to a certain extent after the arrival of next two fuel shipments on Thursday and Friday.
Speaking during the weekly Cabinet media briefing in Colombo today, Minister Amaraweera said the next Petrol shipment is due to arrive in the country on Thursday while a diesel consignment is expected on Friday.
The Minister said the unloading and distribution of the fuel stocks will commence immediately.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said therefore he expects the fuel queues to reduce by the end of the week.
He said the Minister of Energy has also proposed a new mechanism to reduce the fuel queues.
The Minister said according to the new programme, priority will be given to persons involved in essential services, industries, the farming community, three-wheelers and other public transport vehicles when issuing fuel.
Minister Amaraweera said hoarding diesel and petrol also has contributed to the current fuel crisis.
He said it is evident through media reports, certain factions are continuing to collect fuel excessively and thereby creating a shortage.
The Minister said therefore they have held discussions to conduct raids and arrest persons who are hoarding fuel continuously.
He said through such measures they expect the fuel queues in the country to reduce from the weekend.
