Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage has assumed duties as the 24th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army.
The new Commander assumed duties at the Army headquarters this morning.
The President promoted Vikum Liyanage who is the highest ranking officer of the Army at present, to the rank of Lieutenant General, effective today.
Lieutenant General Liyanage who joined the Sri Lanka Army in 1986 as a Cadet Officer served as the Commanding Officer of the 56th and 57th Divisions of the 8th Gajaba Regiment during the conflict with the LTTE.
During his time in the field, the Army Commander was bestowed many medals including the Ranavikrama and Ranashura medals, the Eastern Humanitarian Operation Medal, Northern and Eastern Operation Medal and many more.
Meanwhile, former Army Commander General Shavendra Silva will assume duties as the new Chief of Defense Staff of Sri Lanka tomorrow.
