The Ratnapura Minipura Rankaral Farmers Front has succeeded in introducing an organic fertiliser with promising results, as a successful solution to the fertiliser issue.
The organic fertiliser has been introduced as a result of an extensive experiment conducted by Buddhi Upashantha, an agronomist, while it has been produced in the form of liquid and cubes.
Speaking during the event to officially introduce the fertiliser, Minister of Water Supply Vasudeva Nanayakkara said he will intervene to provide state patronage to promote the fertiliser, as it has shown promising results.
The fertiliser is reportedly the most suitable for paddy, tea and maze crops and vegetable plantations.
Meanwhile the first stock of organic fertiliser required for the Maha season was brought to the island last evening.
Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage said 40,000MT of organic fertiliser required for the Maha season arrived at the Colombo Port yesterday, from Lithuania.
The Agriculture Minister said the programme to send the stock of fertiliser to the Agrarian Service Centres in the Ampara, Batticaloa, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Trincomalee and Hambantota districts, where paddy plantation is prominent, commenced last night.
