Officials say the demand for liquor has decreased by about 30% due to the recent increase in the price of liquor and the decrease in the income of the people.
The matter was revealed at a meeting of the Committee on Public Finance convened under the chairmanship of Parliamentarian Anura Priyadharshana Yapa.
Officials representing several institutions were summoned to discuss the plans to increase the revenue of the government and their current status.
Accordingly, officials representing the Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policies, the Inland Revenue Department, the Sri Lanka Excise Department and the Sri Lanka Customs had attended the virtual meeting.
The Communication Department of the Parliament said during the meeting, officials have claimed that there were several problems in Sri Lanka Excise Department reaching its revenue target including due to the limited quantity of ethanol available for the production of liquor, limited stocks of diesel and fuel, and distribution problems.
They also had pointed out that the demand for alcohol has decreased by about 30% due to the increase in the price of alcohol and the economic hardships faced by the people.
