Major General Vikum Liyanage is due to assume duties as the new Commander of the Sri Lanka Army today (1).
Major General Liyanage will be the 24th Commander. The letter of appointment was presented to the new Army Commander yesterday at the President’s House.
Major General Liyanage who is the highest ranking officer of the Army at present, will be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and will assume duties in his new post today.
Lieutenant General Liyanage who joined the Sri Lanka Army in 1986 as a Cadet Officer served as the Commanding Officer of the 57th and 56th Divisions of the 8th Gajaba Regiment during conflict against the LTTE.
During his time in the field, the Army Commander was bestowed many medals including the Ranavikrama and Ranashura medals, the Eastern Humanitarian Operation Medal, Northern and Eastern Operation Medal and many more.
