The All Ceylon Fisheries Federation warns that the continuous increase in fuel prices has adversely affected the fisheries industry.
National Organiser Ratna Gamage speaking to NewsRadio said a fishing trawler sets aside Rs.2.5 million for diesel purchases, fuel equipment and other necessities as a result of the rise in prices for one trip out to sea.
He requested the government to ease their burdens and provide relief.
He said the fuel price revision is three times more than previous prices and has severely affected the industry.
Gamage said fishermen have reduced sea voyages owing to the rising costs.
He noted that under such circumstances if the catch also reduces, fishermen will be severely impacted leading to losses.
Ratna Gamage questioned if the new government is working towards bringing an end to the fishing industry.
