Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardena says a legal agreement signed by the government cannot be annulled.
Speaking to media, Minister Gunawardena said despite claims by the opposition, governments cannot cancel legal agreements as it pleases after coming into power.
He said the agreement signed with a US firm to handover 40% of the shares of the Yugadanavi Power Plant in Kerawalapitiya was submitted to the Cabinet last week.
Minister Bandula Gunawardena said since the President did not participate in the Cabinet meeting last week, the Yugadanavi agreement will be considered during this week’s meeting.
The Minister said they have nothing to hide about the agreement adding it will be available in public after the Cabinet meeting.
The Minister noted that they vehemently opposed the Hambantota Port agreement but could not cancel or amend it after coming to power.
The Minister said therefore a future government will be unable to annul the Yugadanavi agreement as well.
