Senior Lawyer Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahewa says authorities will have the power to arrest individuals without charges under a state of emergency in the country.
Speaking to media in Colombo Dr. Mahanamahewa said this is not the first time a state of emergency has been imposed in Sri Lanka.
He explained that it will be in effect for a month after President informs of it to Parliament.
However, in this case since it is effective for 14 days, Dr. Mahanamahewa says Parliament need not approve it.
He said the Public Security Ordinance will take prominence before all laws and regulations.
He also mentioned that the Ordinance cannot violate any rights of the people secured through the Constitution of Sri Lanka.
