Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka says State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna must claim responsibility for the change in the composition of gas cylinders by gas companies.
Speaking in Parliament today, the Parliamentarian said the State Minister tabled a document claiming 233 incidents of gas cylinder explosions were reported during 82 months from January 2015 to October 2021.
MP Ranawaka said at least two incidents were reported monthly according to the calculations and questioned the number of incidents reported in November alone.
He said there was an abnormal increase in the number of incidents in November adding the reason behind the increase must be investigated.
The Parliamentarian said the standard ratio of 70:30 was calculated according to local temperatures, boiling point, and marginal pressure even though the State Minister claimed there was no standard for the ratio.
He said gas companies were granted authority to change the ratio up to 5% adding however a discrepancy was reported when the measurements were changed from kilograms to litres when the prices of gas increased.
MP Ranawaka said the butane and propane ratio was amended after which an announcement was made claiming there will be no issues with the new 50:50 ratio.
The Parliamentarian said gas companies must take full responsibility.
