Large crowds gathered in Colombo today to protest against the government and recent actions that have led to the public being severely burdened.
Several protest marches got underway this afternoon and embarked on Colombo.
The protest marches were focused on approaching the Presidential Secretariat.
The main protest was organised by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
A tense situation was also reported, when a group of protesters attempted to force their way into the Presidential Secretariat.
The protesters raised placards, chanted slogans, and wore armbands and headbands.
They opposed the recent spike in cost of living, including essential commodities such as fuel, transportation fares, prices of goods including the shortage of goods in the market such as gas, and milk powder.
The hashtag #gohomegota was also trending on social media platforms including Twitter in Sri Lanka.
