Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara says permission will be granted in future for Sri Lankan expatriate workers to import an electric vehicle based on the remittances they make through official channels.
Minister Nanayakkara said he is hoping to present a cabinet paper to allow migrant workers to import vehicles after paying the necessary duty and taxes.
The Minister noted that since the importation of vehicles has been banned at present, the license to import these vehicles will be issued only to migrants workers who are sending money legally through the banking system.
Minister Manusha Nanayakkara stated that a mechanism will be introduced so that the imported electric vehicles will use solar energy to power the systems and not the main power grid.
Minister Nanayakkara also said that discussions have been held with state banks and private banks to introduce a low-interest home loan scheme for migrant workers.
